Designed by Thea Mehl (Norway) It’s rare to find modern utensils handcrafted in wood, as most American artisans tend towards a traditional or folk art style.

Industrial designer Thea Mehl was drawn to craft from childhood, when she watched her grandfather build model airplanes in his attic workshop. The Loft series represented an opportunity to combine her love for modern forms with the traditional handcraft techniques favored by the artisan that we found to produce the series. The utensils’ graceful sweep and flow are directly influenced by her memory of her grandfather’s model plane propellers.

In a nod to her creative lineage, Loft means “attic” in Norwegian.

Made at Blueberry Hill Treenware (United States) Bill Baumgartel is a master woodworker and a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.

Bill’s woodshop sits in the middle of a blueberry farm in the heart of the Alleghenies in rural Pennsylvania. Surrounded by the beauty of the landscape, he is conscious of the environmental impact of his choice to work with wood: “I’m lucky, beautiful hardwoods grow like weeds here. I only work with fallen timber or trees that have been cut by others for building purposes.” He is also aware of the common sense of making quality objects worth keeping.  “All of the things I make have a ‘my lifetime’ guarantee. Funny that in any given year only 1 or 2 people ever have the reason to take me up on it.”
